Tesla Delivers Itself to New Owner in World-First Autonomous Car Delivery

In a world-first that will revolutionise car ownership and delivery forever, Tesla has completed the first completely autonomous car delivery of a brand-new vehicle. On 27 June 2025, a new Tesla Model Y drove itself from the Austin, Texas Gigafactory directly to the apartment of its new owner, without a single person on board, and with no remote driver at the wheel.

The 30-minute drive spanned approximately 15 miles, carrying the Model Y past a combination of parking lots, highways, urban roads, and neighbourhoods. The car traversed actual road traffic, dealt with stop-and-go conditions, and even came to a halt for pedestrians – all on its own. Tesla documented the whole experience in video form, recording the Model Y departing the factory, merging onto congested highways, and driving through the streets of Austin before reaching the customer’s doorstep.

There were no human beings in the car at all and no remote operators at the wheel ever. FULLY autonomous!” posted Tesla CEO Elon Musk on X (formerly Twitter).

This accomplishment is attributed to Tesla’s advanced Robotaxi software, an upgraded version of the automaker’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Although the Robotaxi software is currently not available for the public, the Model Y reverted to regular FSD after it had been handed over to its new owner.

What’s most surprising is that the Model Y used for this delivery was indistinguishable from any other Model Y rolling off the production line. As Tesla’s Head of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, guaranteed, there were no special modifications—just the latest software and Tesla’s own AI chip powering the wheels.

Autonomous Car Delivery

This milestone follows hard on the heels of Tesla’s unveiling in Austin of its Robotaxi pilot program, where autonomous Model Ys have been shuttling passengers across the city—with a safety driver present. But this shipment represents the first time Tesla has cut the human element out entirely, a big move toward an era when cars don’t require humans on the factory floor or in your garage.

As completely autonomous vehicle regulatory clearance continues to be under development, Tesla’s demo is irrefutable proof of the future. The implications are gigantic for the auto, logistics, and mobility sectors—having your new vehicle brought to your home and ready to drive with just a few touch inputs on your phone.

For motorists in the region and the region’s motor industry, this innovation highlights the accelerating speed of change in electric and autonomous vehicles. As these technologies evolve further, they have the potential not only for greater convenience but for greater safety and efficiency on Australian roads.
