Recent spy shots have shown that the next gen Subaru Outback will adopt a significant redesign, abandoning much of its traditional wagon styling in favour of a more SUV-like shape. Next-generation 2026 Subaru Outback boasts a more robust and squared-off design compared to an SUV-like look. The prototypes, camouflaged and presenting a bulkier frame with straight body lines, abandon some of the persona associated with a classic wagon from the Outback.

Key Design Changes
- Bolder Front End: Features a more prominent grille and pronounced corner vents
- Upright Profile: Adopts a squared-off roofline, departing from the traditional wagon-like curved design
- Angular Elements: Incorporates the brand’s controversial angular wheel arches, aligning with current Subaru design language
- Modern Lighting: Implements a split-light configuration with dedicated daytime running lamps
Interior and Technology
The prototype vehicles showcase a revised interior layout featuring dual tablet-style displays, marking a significant departure from the current model’s distinctive portrait-oriented central screen.
Anticipated Features
- Powertrain Evolution: Expected introduction of a hybrid powertrain
- Engine Configuration: Likely retention of Subaru’s signature boxer engine
- Transmission: Potential shift from CVT to a traditional geared transmission
The new Outback is differentiated from its predecessor on the outside by a few subtle yet key changes. Its front end is decidedly more substantial, with a larger central grille and corner vents of prominent proportion.
While some of the hood’s proportions may be artificially enhanced by some judiciously placed false panels, the overall SUV-like stance is likely quite deliberate, given today’s market. Gone is the old model’s subtle roof curve; in its place is a straight roofline, serving to make the vehicle appear even taller.
The side windows now are rectangular and, on the D-pillar, carry over from the design of the second-generation Legacy Outback. Angular wheel arches are new for this model, continuing an oft-polarizing design trait shared among other Subaru models that helps these cars feel more consistent in the lineup.
Slim front lights share their lighting element design with the Forester, the light itself split into a thin unit with daytime running lamps positioned above.
The Next Gen Subaru Outback
Inside, the spy shots reveal a brace of tablet-style screens, eschewing the current car’s single large portrait-format central display. Little is known of the powertrains that will be offered, but expect a hybrid derivative-perhaps retaining the boxer engine mated to a geared transmission rather than a CVT.
Expect the restyled Subaru Outback to bow next year, as a 2026 model. Its new direction follows Subaru’s shift with the rising popularity tide of SUVs and will very likely grow the circle of Outback popularity while redefining what the Outback is.
