Japanese Giants Toyota and Subaru to Unveil New EV Model Next Year

Toyota and Subaru have bigger plans for electric vehicles beyond the bZ4X and Solterra, with both working on a new, fully electric model together.

According to a recent report from Nikkei Asia, the two Japanese manufacturers will offer a second zero-emission SUV, with production scheduled to start at the beginning of January 2026.

While Toyota manufactures the bZ4X and Solterra at its Aichi facility, the new car is expected to be built at Subaru’s Yajima plant. The coming electric SUV will not be fully all-new from scratch but shares most of the components from their existing electric cars. This can hasten the development process and reduce costs to achieve a monthly production of around 15,000 to 20,000 units.

Most likely, the next EV will try to penetrate into numerous markets in North America, Europe, and Japan. Quite possibly, others also are in the running. In the meantime, it is not specified if the newest model must be cheaper on the market compared with the current bZ4X and Solterra, which have base prices of $44,465 and $46,340, respectively in the US.

Through September, US sales of the bZ4X have topped 13,577 units, while its near clone, the Subaru Solterra, has moved 9,137 in the same time period. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is faring very well with 30,318, Kia’s EV6 leads on sales with 15,985 crossovers, and Honda’s Prologue has 14,179 units through September.

Early this year, Toyota and Subaru announced the joint development of three additional electric vehicles besides the bZ4X and Solterra. The other two, like the upcoming 2026 model, will also be crossovers.

Considering that the production of the new EV begins in January 2026, both official announcements from Toyota and Subaru should happen during the second half of next year.

Meanwhile, the two carmakers are still committed to continuous work on combustion engines. Several months ago, the two participated in a joint conference with Mazda to reveal new and refreshed internal combustion engines-also known as ICEs.
